Infection Prevention and Control Principles and Practices for Local Health Agencies:

  • Standard Precautionsthe purpose of polices and procedures in place for Infection Prevention and Control is to ensure employees, clients and families are protected against infectious diseases and infections by providing guidelines for their investigation, control and prevention. The starting point with infection prevention and control is developing an infection prevention and control policy. The policy must be live and reviewed where necessary as changes occur. Based on work activities in the work environment, taking into account personnel and others within the environment. The policy should be current and practical to ensure its suitable implementation in the work setting. It should be clear and structured in the work setting, so that the everyone knows what is expected of them.
  • Hand Hygiene:
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
The employer must provide and maintain any necessary PPE free of charge to personnel in order for personnel to carry out their duties in an effective manner. The choice of PPE depends on the type of risk. A risk assessment undertaking before choice of PPE.
  • Needlestick and Sharps Injury Prevention:
  • Cleaning and Disinfection:
  • Respiratory Hygiene (Cough Etiquette):
  • Waste Disposal:
  • Safe Injection Practices:
  • Risk Assessment:
A risk assessment policy should include a requirement that the healthcare business assess infection control risks through development and recording an infection control risk assessment. An infection control risk assessment must be carried out to assess infection hazards and risks and ensure that, where possible, infection risks are eliminated, reduced, contained and managed appropriately. The infection control risk assessment will identify particular tasks that may carry the risk of contamination or the spread of disease.

The precautions and controls put in place must be proportionate to the risks.
